This book Mathematics in the Modern World is written to help college studens answer the following question: What is mathematics? Where can it be found? What is it for? What is it about? How is it done? Who uses it? The first four chapters discuss the required lessons identified in the course syllabus while the remaining chapters are the elective ones. It is important to note that the first four chapters, namely The Nature of Mathematics, Mathematical Language and Symbols, Problem Solving and Reasoning, and The Statistical Tools are the non-negotiable topics, and together with one or two from the elective ones, depending on the need of the students, make up the whole course. Our entire years of teaching mathematics in the tertiary level helped us to come up with this book written in a simple tone which we hope to appeal to any college student taking this general education course. The elective topics may require some level of mathematical maturity, but the style in which they are written could help in the understanding of the topics presented. to help both the students and the teachers, we have carefully prepared a wide array of exercises with different difficulty levels, specifically designed to reinforce the earlier lesson and, sometimes, to introduce the next topic. This book will not be realized without the help of the instructors of the first generation training at the ADMU with Dr. Flordeliza F. Francisco and Dr. Angela Fatima H. Guzon who unselfishly shared their expertise in the different core areas. We also acknowledge the help of Rodman F. Manalang (PhD Mathematics candidate at DLSU) who took the first generation training and gave second generation training at the University of the East, Manila. We hope you appreciate and enjoy mathematics with the aid of this book.
